Sint-Germanus church, Gothic church and UNESCO World Heritage belfry in Tienen, Belgium
Sint-Germanus is a Gothic church in Tienen and sits on the UNESCO World Heritage list. The building was constructed with Overlaar quartzite stone and features a tower with a bell system.
The church was built in the 12th century with Romanesque features originally present. Over time, major Gothic period modifications were made due to structural problems and local disasters.
The church holds one of the oldest organs in the Low Countries and displays three wall murals created by artist Yvan Struys in 2003. These artistic elements shape the interior and reflect different periods of decoration.
Visiting is possible during regular hours spread throughout the week. Tower tours can be arranged in advance for those wanting to explore the bell chamber.
The choir section sits at a seven-degree angle from the nave axis. This distinctive feature resulted from structural adaptations needed to address ground subsidence.
