Marais d’Harchies – Hensies – Pommerœul

The Marais d'Harchies is a nature reserve in the Hainaut region covering roughly 550 hectares of wetlands. Extended water bodies, reed beds, and different ecological zones create varied habitats for numerous plant and animal species throughout the year.

The wetland received international recognition when it was designated as a Ramsar site, acknowledging its global importance for water management and wildlife protection. This designation reflects the long-term commitment to preserving this natural space for future generations.

The visitor center offers guided tours and educational programs that teach people about wetland ecosystems and nature conservation efforts. Local communities and nature groups use the area to connect with the natural world and learn about environmental stewardship.

Two marked walking routes of roughly 5 and 7 kilometers guide visitors through the reserve with several observation points positioned for good views. Well-maintained trails and platforms make it easy to navigate and watch wildlife from comfortable spots.

The marshes host over 300 bird species throughout the year, representing the highest concentration of water birds in the Walloon region. This variety makes it an extraordinary spot for birdwatchers from across the area.
