Wiszegrad

Wiszegrad is the highest peak of the Sakar mountain range in southeastern Bulgaria, standing at 856 meters above sea level. The massif consists of rock formations shaped by tectonic activity during the Jurassic and Cretaceous periods.

The mountain range formed during the Jurassic and Cretaceous periods when tectonic shifts pushed rock masses upward into higher relief. These geological events created the landscape you see today.

Wine production in the surrounding vineyards follows methods that local growers have used for many decades, shaping how the region looks and functions today. The slopes below reflect this long tradition of grape cultivation.

Hikers can reach the summit using marked trails that begin from Topolovgrad and require moderate physical fitness to complete. Proper footwear and water supply are essential, as the paths become steep and no facilities exist at the top.

The peak serves as an important observation point for birds of prey, particularly a small falcon species that inhabits the region. This bird species is uncommon and uses the elevation for hunting.
