Olot, Volcanic city in Garrotxa, Spain
Olot is a town in the Garrotxa region of Catalonia, situated at approximately 443 meters elevation. The Fluvià and Riudaura rivers run through the area, while the settlement sits in a valley formed by surrounding volcanic cones.
The town was first documented in 1206 and developed as an important trade center in the region. Following severe earthquakes in the 1420s that destroyed medieval structures, the settlement was rebuilt and reshaped during reconstruction.
The town has a long tradition of decorative arts, particularly in plaster and stone craftsmanship that local artisans continue to practice today. Walking through the old quarters, you notice small workshops where these craftspeople create ornamental objects following techniques passed down through generations.
The Parc Nou is a botanical garden showcasing local plant species with paths for walking through the grounds. Visitors can explore on foot and learn more about the region's natural environment at their own pace.
Four distinct volcanoes - Montolivet, Montsacopa, Garrinada, and Bisaroques - sit within the town boundaries and form a natural volcanic park. These cones are now covered in vegetation and easily accessible, making the landscape quite unusual.
