Cave of Altacosa, Prehistoric cave in Santillana del Mar, Spain

The Cave of Altamira extends 270 meters in length with passages and chambers containing numerous polychrome paintings of animals on its limestone walls and ceilings.

A hunter discovered the cave in 1868, leading to archaeological excavations that revealed artifacts and artwork dating from 36,000 to 13,000 years ago.

The cave contains over 100 animal figures painted in red and black pigments, including bison, horses, and deer, representing early human artistic expression.

Visitors can explore a precise replica of the cave at the National Museum and Research Center of Altamira, as access to the original site remains restricted.

The prehistoric artists incorporated natural rock formations into their compositions, creating three-dimensional effects in their paintings of animals.
