Puerto Calderón

Puerto Calderón is a natural cove on the Cantabrian coast with high cliffs that form a protected harbor. The deep waters in this curved inlet allow boats to anchor safely and securely.

The cove has served as an anchorage since Roman times, with ancient mooring structures still visible at low tide. During the medieval period, it became an important port for trade among nearby coastal towns.

The port functioned as a strategic free port between San Vicente de la Barquera and Santander during medieval times, fostering regional trade.

The waters are suitable for small fishing and recreational boats with modern docking facilities. A direct road from the village of Oreña provides convenient access to this harbor area.

During World War II, the German Navy used this hidden cove as a submarine base because of its deep waters and sheltered position. This strategic role remains an overlooked chapter in the location's history.
