Sierra de Andújar Natural Park

Sierra de Andújar Natural Park, Protected natural area in Sierra Morena mountains, Spain.

Sierra de Andújar Natural Park is a large protected area in the Sierra Morena mountains featuring Mediterranean forests with diverse oak species and dense woodland. The landscape encompasses varied terrain including hills, valleys, and waterways spread across several municipalities.

This area received official protected status in 1989 to preserve ancient Mediterranean forest ecosystems. The designation established a vital conservation zone in northwestern Jaén province.

The Sanctuary of Virgen de la Cabeza sits on a hilltop within the park and holds deep meaning for local communities as a pilgrimage destination. Visitors can see how this sacred place shapes the spiritual life of the region.

The park can be accessed via the A4 road connecting Córdoba and Jaén, with an information center available for visitor guidance. Spring and fall are ideal times to explore, as summer heat can be intense throughout the region.

The park shelters one of the largest populations of Iberian lynx, a rare predator with spotted fur and distinctive tufted ears. This makes it a crucial refuge for one of Europe's most endangered cats.
