Castle of Zalatambor

Castle of Zalatambor sits atop a rocky outcrop with remaining defensive walls and viewpoints overlooking the Ega River valley. The stone structures follow the natural slope, creating different levels that mark separate functional areas of the fortress.

The fortress was founded around 1024 as a military outpost for Navarrese rulers and remained under their control until 1512. Its capture by Castilian forces marked the end of its role as a strategic border stronghold.

The fortress served as a protective waypoint for pilgrims traveling the Santiago route during medieval times. Local residents today connect this place with the area's historical role in safeguarding travelers.

Reach the ruins by following marked hiking paths from the town center of Estella-Lizarra, wearing sturdy footwear for the rocky terrain. The site is exposed and uneven, so prepare for changing weather conditions.

The walls display three construction phases using different masonry techniques, from rough fieldstone to precisely cut blocks. These layers visually document how building methods evolved across generations.
