Zahara de los Atunes

Zahara de los Atunes is a coastal settlement in Barbate, Spain, stretching along a narrow strip of shore between two mountain ridges. Sandy beaches run the full length, broken by rocky sections and small coves that shape the edge of the sea.

The settlement began during Phoenician times as a fishing village and grew into a center for tuna fishing by the 15th century. A castle was later built to protect the valuable fishing rights and secure the coast.
