Alt Pirineu i Aran

Alt Pirineu i Aran is a mountainous region in northwestern Catalonia spanning six counties and bordering Aragon. It houses two natural parks and Aigüestortes National Park, containing the bulk of Catalonia's protected lands.

The territory gained official status in 2001 when it was recognized as a distinct administrative region of Catalonia. This designation acknowledged the unique geographical and cultural character of this Pyrenean zone.

Aranese is spoken daily in the valleys and stands as one of Europe's rarest languages, found only in this corner of the Pyrenees. This linguistic heritage shapes how local people identify themselves and connect to their mountain communities.
