Lower Cerdanya

The Cerdanya valley extends across the eastern Pyrenees, characterized by high mountains and wide meadows along the upper Sègre River basin.

The County of Cerdanya, established in the late 8th century under Frankish rule, underwent territorial changes until its division between Spain and France in 1659.

Local traditions persist across the French-Spanish border, with families maintaining connections through regular travel between both sides of the administrative boundary.

The region contains multiple municipalities including Puigcerdà, which functions as the administrative center and houses governmental services for the Spanish section.

The Spanish municipality of Llívia remains an enclave within French territory, maintaining its historical status despite the territorial divisions of the Treaty of the Pyrenees.
