Jameos del Agua, Cave and auditorium complex in Haría, Spain

Jameos del Agua is a complex of lava tubes beneath the Monte Corona volcano with several interconnected caves and chambers. Within this structure are a natural underground salt lake, gardens, swimming pools, and performance spaces.

Artist César Manrique transformed this section of lava tubes from an overlooked location into a cultural center during the 1960s. The first phase was completed in 1966 and established a new approach to adapting natural spaces.

The subterranean performance venue takes advantage of natural acoustics created by lava stone for concerts and shows. Visitors experience music here in a completely different setting than traditional venues, surrounded by ancient rock.

Visitors can explore various paths through the spaces during daytime hours, with viewing points positioned along the marked walkways. On-site restaurants serve local food for those wanting a fuller experience of the location.

The underground lake is home to tiny white blind crabs found nowhere else on Earth. These remarkable creatures live in permanent darkness and are easy to miss unless you know to look closely.
