Natural Park of Fuentes del Narcea, Degaña e Ibias

The Natural Park of Fuentes del Narcea, Degaña e Ibias sits in northern Spain and spreads across several municipalities with a mix of forests, rivers, and mountain terrain. The landscape features old oak woodlands, clear river valleys, and rocky hills that cover different elevations.

This area gained protected status in 2002, integrating the Muniellos biosphere reserve into its system. Logging operations stopped in 1970, allowing the forest to recover naturally over the decades.

Local communities maintain traditional farming practices and crafts that have been passed down through generations. Walking through the villages here, you notice how people have shaped their daily life around the mountain landscape.

Access to certain areas requires special permits from the park office. Plan ahead and check the requirements before heading to remote reserves or protected zones.

The reserve contains two bird protection zones with different focuses: one centered on old beech forests, the other on river valleys and wetlands. These zones protect different bird species and show just how varied the terrain can be.
