Fuente de la Hispanidad, Contemporary fountain in Plaza de Nuestra Señora del Pilar, Spain
The Fuente de la Hispanidad in Plaza de Nuestra Señora del Pilar features a large water cascade descending into a pond shaped like South America. Three white marble blocks within the design symbolize Columbus's ships and frame the water composition.
Architect Ricardo Usón García designed this work in 1991 during preparations for the 500th anniversary of Columbus's arrival in the Americas. The project emerged from efforts to mark this significant historical moment in remembrance of the voyage.
The water design and shapes represent the connection between Spain and Latin America. Visitors can see how the fountain's form tells a story about this historical relationship through its visual elements.
The fountain sits in a central location on the plaza with multiple viewpoints around it. Its proximity to pedestrian areas and surrounding buildings makes it accessible from various angles throughout the square.
A large concrete globe stands beside the water feature, representing the four continents beyond South America. This separate sculpture adds a cosmic perspective to the overall artistic concept.
