Holy Chapel of Our Lady of Pillar, Baroque chapel in Zaragoza, Spain
The Holy Chapel of Our Lady of Pillar is a baroque chapel built inside the Basilica of Our Lady of the Pillar in Zaragoza, housing the venerated statue of the Virgin on her jasper column. It stands as a freestanding oval structure within the basilica, topped by a dome and surrounded by jasper columns that separate it from the rest of the church interior.
The chapel was built in the 18th century to the design of architect Ventura Rodríguez, created to properly enshrine the jasper column that had been venerated at the site of an alleged apparition of the Virgin. Before this construction, the column had been an object of worship since medieval times, with earlier structures having sheltered it at the same location.
Inside the chapel stands a small wooden statue of the Virgin Mary placed on a jasper column, drawing pilgrims from across the world throughout the year. The column is considered the spot where the Virgin appeared to the apostle James, and visitors today still approach it to touch or kiss the pillar as a gesture of devotion.
The chapel is reached through the main entrance of the basilica and sits at the very center of the building. Photography is generally not allowed inside the chapel itself, and visitors are expected to dress and behave respectfully, as the space is in active religious use.
The jasper column venerated inside the chapel shows a small worn patch at one point, where centuries of pilgrims touching and kissing the same spot have left a visible mark. This detail on the column is one of the most tangible signs of how long and how intensely the site has been visited.
