Caballito de La Lonja, Bronze and granite statue at Paseo de Echegaray y Caballero, Zaragoza, Spain
Caballito de La Lonji is a life-sized bronze horse sculpture with granite base elements located near the Ebro River waterfront in Zaragoza's historic center. The work stands at a prominent intersection between two main streets where foot traffic naturally gathers.
A wooden horse prop served as a photography backdrop from 1925 to 1978, where a local photographer documented countless portraits of residents. The current bronze replacement was installed in 1991 to commemorate that vanished tradition.
The sculpture honors a photography tradition that shaped the city's visual memory over generations. Visitors who pause here can sense the connection between past portrait sessions and the place's role as a social meeting point.
The statue remains accessible to visitors throughout the year and serves as a helpful orientation point in the historic quarter. It makes for an easy-to-remember gathering spot if you are coordinating with others or simply want to take a photograph.
Every February, local knitting groups decorate the horse with colorful yarns and ornaments to celebrate San Valero. This yearly custom blends traditional textile crafts with a contemporary public sculpture in an unexpected and heartwarming way.
