Lantern of La Seo, Lantern tower at Cathedral of the Savior, Zaragoza, Spain

The Lantern of La Seo is an octagonal tower rising above the Cathedral of the Savior with two brick levels decorated in geometric Mudéjar patterns and Gothic windows. The structure channels natural light into the central area of the cathedral through its carefully positioned openings.

The current lantern was completed in 1520 under Juan de Sisuar's direction, replacing two earlier versions that collapsed in 1403 and 1417. This third design represented a major effort to achieve lasting structural stability for the cathedral's roof light.

The lantern combines Gothic, Mudéjar, and Renaissance elements into a distinctive architectural statement. Wooden keys adorned in gold and sculptures of Latin Church Fathers and Evangelists decorate the interior, reflecting the spiritual importance of this sacred space.

The lantern is best viewed from inside the cathedral, where its light and structure are most apparent. Position yourself in the central area beneath the lantern to fully appreciate its architectural details and the way it illuminates the interior space.

Eight diagonal crossed arches at the base form an eight-pointed star pattern that supports the upper octagonal structure with geometric precision. This hidden architectural detail reveals the medieval builders' skill in combining structural necessity with mathematical elegance.
