Alcaraz

Alcaraz is a municipality in Albacete Province that sits on elevated terrain in central Spain, featuring a medieval town center. The layout centers around historic squares and narrow streets lined with stone buildings from different periods.

Christian forces took control of the territory in 1213, and the settlement gained formal city status through royal decree in 1429. This recognition strengthened its position as an important regional center during the medieval period.

Walking through the town, you notice how the medieval layout shaped the way locals move through and use the streets. The place keeps its identity through local traditions that are woven into daily life and community gatherings.

The town is accessible by regional roads and best explored on foot, since the historic areas are tight and difficult for cars to navigate. Wear comfortable walking shoes, as the terrain is uneven and the streets go uphill and downhill.

The territory once included several outlying villages that broke away and became independent settlements by the late 1500s. This fragmentation reduced what locals considered Alcaraz to a much smaller area than it had been centuries before.
