Pico de la Sarga, Mountain peak in Sierra de Alcaraz, Spain
Pico de la Sarga is a mountain summit in the Sierra de Alcaraz range located in Albacete Province, rising to approximately 1,769 meters (5,810 feet). The peak forms the second highest point within this mountain chain and is surrounded by forested slopes.
The mountain is part of the Prebetic System, a geological formation that developed during the creation of the extensive Baetic mountain ranges. This geological history shaped the landscape structure visible today.
The peak is a well-used destination for local climbers from surrounding villages, with paths established over generations showing how people in the region engage with their mountains. These routes reflect a long tradition of mountain use within the community.
The summit can be reached via a maintained track from Puerto del Bellotar on the CM-3205 road, passing through pine forests up to about 1,600 meters (5,250 feet). Good footwear is essential, and the climb is most manageable in fair weather conditions.
The mountain is historically notable as the site where the notorious bandit Pernales encountered the Civil Guard, with his burial later occurring in Alcaraz cemetery. This connection to local history makes the location noteworthy for those interested in regional stories.
