Tres Cantos, Modern municipality in Madrid metropolitan area, Spain
Tres Cantos is a modern municipality in the Madrid metropolitan area, located in the Community of Madrid, Spain, roughly 22 kilometers north of the capital at an elevation of 710 meters. The settlement divides into several sectors with organized street grids and residential zones alternating with commercial and technology centers.
The settlement began in the 1970s as a planned satellite town designed to ease population pressure on Madrid. After years under Colmenar Viejo administration, the municipality gained independence in 1991 and quickly developed into a self-sufficient economic center.
Street names in the Océanos neighborhood follow a thematic pattern based on world oceans, while other areas use their own naming logic. Residents navigate using sector themes as daily reference points and identify their neighborhood by its design concept.
Train connections run directly to central Madrid, while several bus routes reach surrounding towns in the metropolitan area. The flat topography within sectors makes it easy for pedestrians and cyclists to move through the urban grid.
Though only a few decades old, the municipality now hosts headquarters of international technology corporations. This transformation turned an empty plain into one of the most important business hubs north of Madrid.
