Sites archéologiques de Colmenar Viejo

The Yacimientos arqueológicos de Colmenar Viejo is an archaeological site consisting of two main areas: Fuente del Moro and the Remedios necropolis. The location contains tombs carved into rock and burials in stone chambers, along with remains of residential and service buildings from the period of occupation.

The site dates to the Hispano-Visigothic period of the 6th and 7th centuries and provides evidence of continuous settlement. The structures and artifacts reflect a time when the region was under Visigothic rule.

The excavations reveal medieval objects such as bronze belt buckles decorated with plant motifs and ceramic jugs that reflect specific burial practices. These finds tell us about the lives and customs of the people who were buried here.

The two excavation areas are located in the Dehesa de Navalvillar region and are accessible to visitors through guided tours arranged by the municipality of Colmenar Viejo. It is advisable to contact the local town office in advance to arrange your visit and learn about current access conditions.

A distinctive feature of the Remedios necropolis is that certain tombs were reused for two or even three separate burials over time. This practice shows how burial spaces were reopened and occupied across generations, offering insights into how communities managed their burial grounds.
