GR-124, ruta de gran recorrido
The GR-124 is a walking path in the Community of Madrid that runs largely alongside the Madrid River, offering flat, easy-to-walk sections through mixed landscapes of forests and open fields. The route is well-marked and accessible to walkers of different fitness levels.
The route was created in the 15th century as a hunting path for King Henry III of Castile, connecting his palace in El Pardo to the Sierra de Guadarrama mountains. After nearly disappearing as Madrid expanded, the path was restored and incorporated into Spain's GR network in 1999.
Local residents use the trail for leisurely walks and casual outings throughout the year. The path reflects how people in Madrid balance city living with time spent in natural spaces near home.
The trail is easily accessed from Príncipe Pío station by public transport and can be walked as a day trip or split across two days depending on your pace. Bring plenty of water, snacks, and a navigation app or map to stay oriented, as sections are remote.
The trail was designed as a royal hunting route and passes near the former Vicente Calderón stadium, where the local football team once played for decades. This unexpected overlap between ancient royal pathways and modern sports history gives the walk an unusual character.
