Júzcar, Municipality in Serranía de Ronda, Málaga Province, Spain
Júzcar is a small village nestled in the mountain valleys of Málaga Province, with houses that cling to the hillsides and follow the natural terrain. The built environment is compact and walkable, with narrow streets connecting different levels of the settlement.
The settlement was established during the period of Arab occupation in southern Spain, and the landscape continues to bear marks of that era. For centuries it remained a small farming community tied to the land and the river that sustained it.
The name comes from an Arabic word for spring, a connection still visible in the river that runs through the valley below. Locals gather in the central square for seasonal celebrations and markets that bring the community together.
The village is best explored on foot since the streets are narrow and steep, making driving difficult and parking limited. Early mornings offer the quietest experience before other visitors arrive, giving you time to wander the lanes without crowds.
In 2011, the entire village was painted blue as part of a movie marketing campaign, a transformation that captured worldwide attention. The blue color remains today and has unexpectedly turned this quiet place into a destination people travel specifically to see.

Andalusia offers many sites away from typical tourist routes. This southern region of Spain is home to ancient troglodyte dwellings in Guadix, mountain villages like Zahara de la Sierra perched around medieval castles, and natural parks such as Cabo de Gata-Níjar extending over 50 kilometers of coast. Geological formations include the red volcanic rocks of Riotinto, a result of 5,000 years of mining, and canyons housing 240 Bronze Age dolmens in Gorafe park. Villages like Setenil de las Bodegas feature unique architecture, with houses built beneath natural rock overhangs shaped by the Trejo River. The Castle of La Calahorra, built in 1509 at an altitude of 1200 meters, combines Spanish fortifications with Italian Renaissance decoration. Further north, Baños de la Encina hosts the Burgalimar Castle dating from 968, surrounded by extensive olive groves. These sites showcase different facets of Andalusian heritage, from prehistoric remains to Moorish inscriptions, in environments ranging from mountains to Mediterranean coastal zones.
