Poniente Almeriense, Comarca in Almería, Spain
Poniente Almeriense is a coastal region in Almería Province in southeastern Spain comprising ten municipalities, including Adra and El Ejido. The landscape is dominated by greenhouses that spread across large areas and form the economic foundation of this region.
Ancient Phoenicians founded Adra as a trading colony and left a long history of settlement and cultural exchange in this area. These early roots later developed into an important harbor under Roman and later Moorish rule.
Fishing and agriculture have shaped life in the coastal towns for centuries, and these traditions remain visible in daily routines and local markets. The harbors, especially in Adra, continue to reflect the importance of the sea to the communities that live along this stretch of coast.
The region is best reached by car, as the municipalities are scattered along the coast and roads provide good connections between them. Spring and autumn offer the most pleasant weather for visiting, when temperatures are mild and the area feels less crowded.
The Albufera de Adra is a wetland where diverse bird species arrive to breed and rest, drawing birdwatchers to observe rare visitors. This protected habitat gives the region unexpected ecological importance beyond its agricultural focus.
