Calaceite, Historic municipality in Matarraña, Spain.

Calaceite is a town in the Matarraña region of Aragon, with narrow lanes of stone houses converging toward a central plaza. The square is framed by arcaded galleries, and buildings around it display features from different periods, including Gothic doorways and Renaissance details.

The area developed from an Arab fortress called Qal'at Zayd into a medieval regional hub. After Christian reconquest, the settlement became strategically important for defense and trade in this border region.

The main street serves as the true center of daily life, where locals gather and shops line the arcaded walkways that frame the square. This reflects how the medieval street design still organizes how people move through and experience the town.

The town is compact and walkable, though the steep lanes require comfortable shoes and a steady pace. The central plaza serves as a good landmark for orienting yourself as you explore the different quarters.

Two nearby ancient settlement sites, San Antonio and Tossal Redó, contain traces of Iberian cultures that lived here long before the medieval town was built. These remains connect the current village to a much older past of the region.
