Villafranca del Bierzo

Located at an elevation of 499 meters, Villafranca del Bierzo extends along the banks of the Burbia River in northwestern Spain.

The town emerged in the 9th century as a French settlement on the Way of St. James, leading to its name which translates to French Town.

The Collegiate Church of Santa María, designed by Gil de Hontañón, represents the Gothic architectural style with its structured details and religious significance.

The municipality contains numerous accommodations, restaurants, and information centers specifically catering to pilgrims walking the Camino de Santiago route.

The Puerta del Perdón at the Church of Santiago allowed ill pilgrims to receive the same blessings as those who completed the journey to Compostela.
