Port of A Coruña, Maritime port in A Coruña, Spain.
The Port of A Coruña is a working port on the Atlantic coast of Galicia, in northwestern Spain. It has several docks handling fishing, bulk cargo, and container traffic side by side along the waterfront.
A Coruña has served as a trading hub with northern Europe since the Middle Ages, particularly with Britain and the Low Countries. During the 20th century the port was modernized to handle growing freight traffic.
Fishing boats come and go throughout the day, keeping the maritime heritage visible and alive. You see nets, equipment, and the everyday work of people whose lives center on the ocean.
The docks sit right along the waterfront promenade, making the port easy to reach on foot from the city center. Some working areas are off-limits to visitors, so it is worth staying on the public paths.
The port was one of the departure points for the Spanish Armada in 1588, and the surviving ships returned here after the failed campaign. This stretch of water has therefore witnessed one of the most talked-about naval events in European history.
