Zizur Mayor/Zizur Nagusia, municipality in Navarre, Spain
Zizur Mayor, also known as Zizur Nagusia, is a municipality in the Basin of Pamplona, in the Navarra region of Spain. It borders Pamplona directly to the west and sits on gently elevated ground to the left of the Sadar River.
The area of Zizur Mayor was for centuries part of a broader local council tied to the surrounding lands of Pamplona. In the early 1990s, a regional decree turned it into a fully independent municipality with its own local government.
Zizur Mayor sits directly on the Camino de Santiago, and pilgrims pass through the town every day on their way toward Pamplona or heading west. The yellow shell markers are visible along the main street, giving the town a quiet but steady connection to this centuries-old route.
The town is easy to explore on foot, as the streets are flat and the layout is compact. Anyone needing a wider range of shops or services will find the center of Pamplona just a short walk or ride away, since the two towns share a direct border.
Although Zizur Mayor is a separate municipality, it grew so close to Pamplona that the boundary between the two towns is nearly invisible when walking through. Pilgrims on the Camino de Santiago often step from one town into the other without noticing any change in the streets around them.
