Santander Airport, airport in Spain
Santander Airport, also known as Seve Ballesteros Airport, is an airport in Real Valle de Camargo, approximately 5 kilometers south of Santander in Spain's Cantabria region. The modern facility features a single terminal with separate areas for departures and arrivals, check-in counters, security checkpoints, shops and cafeterias in public zones, and a 2,400-meter runway that ends near the coastline.
The airport opened in 1953 and initially served military purposes before transitioning to civilian operations. Major upgrades occurred during the 1970s and again in 2010, allowing the infrastructure to meet the growing demands of regional air traffic.
The airport has borne the name of legendary golfer Severiano Ballesteros since 2015, reflecting local pride in the region. This naming is visible on signage throughout the facility and gives the place a personal character that highlights the golfer's significance to Cantabria.
The airport is easily reached by car via good roads and offers more than 700 parking spaces, including spots for people with disabilities and car rentals. Taxis wait outside the terminal, and bus lines connect the airport directly to Santander's city center in just a few minutes.
The runway ends directly near the bay, making planes appear to fly over water during takeoff and landing. This geographic feature creates a rare sight that visitors and passengers often notice and remember as a striking part of their journey.
