Plaza de toros de Santander, Bullring in Santander, Spain
The Plaza de Toros de Santander is a bullring built in Neo-Mudéjar style with a diameter of 51 meters (167 feet), featuring decorative arches, ironwork, and stone masonry arranged in a circular form. The venue contains multiple tiers of seating distributed throughout its interior to accommodate spectators around the central ring.
The venue was designed by architect Alfredo de la Escalera y Amblard and opened on July 25, 1890, as a replacement for a smaller previous arena. Its construction reflected the growing popularity of bullfighting events in Santander during that period.
The Santiago Fair, held each summer, presents six regular bullfights, one charity event, a novice fight, and mounted bullfighting competitions.
The venue is easiest to visit during the summer months when the Santiago Fair events take place. A 2013 renovation improved access and circulation throughout the various tiers of the building significantly.
The upper arcade displays emblems from Spanish bull breeding farms, including a distinctive design featuring a crab with the letter S representing Santander. This local symbol connects the arena to both regional pride and the broader tradition of bullfighting heritage.
