Plaza de toros de Santander, Bullring in Santander, Spain
The Plaza de Toros de Santander is a bullring in Neo-Mudéjar style located in the northern Spanish city of Santander, recognizable by its decorative arches, ironwork, and stone walls arranged in a circular form. It has several tiers of seating that wrap around the central sand ring.
The arena was designed by architect Alfredo de la Escalera y Amblard and opened on July 25, 1890, replacing a smaller earlier ring in the city. In 2013, the building underwent renovation work to improve access and visitor flow throughout its interior.
The Santiago Fair takes place here every summer and draws large crowds from across the region to watch bullfights and other events. For many people in Santander, attending the fair is a long-standing local habit tied to the city's identity.
The arena is most active during the summer months when the Santiago Fair events are held, making that period the best time to see the building in use. Outside of the fair season, the exterior is freely visible and easy to reach on foot from the city center.
The upper arcade of the building displays emblems from bull breeding farms across Spain, and one of them features a crab holding the letter S, a direct reference to the coat of arms of Santander. This small detail is easy to miss but ties the arena directly to the city's own heraldry.
