Church of San Francisco, Santander, Catholic church in central Santander, Spain
The Church of San Francisco is a church building in central Santander that combines different architectural styles. The structure features neoclassical influences with a classical portico topped by a triangular pediment and a dome over the transept.
The current building was constructed from 1940 to 1953, replacing a Franciscan monastery that had occupied this site since the 13th century. The reconstruction followed modern design principles, marking a departure from the medieval structure that stood before.
The name recalls the Franciscan legacy of this ground, where religious communities once gathered in prayer. Today the interior displays a classical style that creates a contemplative mood for visitors.
The church is situated on Calle de los Escalantes near the town hall, making it easily accessible on foot. The interior is best appreciated during daylight hours to fully observe the classical decoration and architectural details.
The crypt holds a polychrome relief sculpture of the Piedad created by local artist Manuel Cacicedo. This sculpture is frequently overlooked by visitors despite being a noteworthy example of local artistic craftsmanship.
