Hospital of San Rafael

The Hospital of San Rafael is a Baroque building in central Santander featuring symmetrical windows and carefully worked stone detailing across its facade. The structure displays classical proportions and was later adapted to serve as the seat of the regional parliament.

The building was constructed in the late 18th century under the direction of a bishop and initially served as a hospital for the city. Its purpose changed fundamentally in the 20th century when it was converted into the seat of a political institution.

The building carries the name of Saint Rafael and reflects its past role as a healing institution through the careful spatial organization of its interior. The rooms still convey a sense of care and service, having been designed to support those in need.
