Hospital of San Rafael, Baroque parliament building in Santander, Spain.

The Hospital of San Rafael is a Baroque building in central Santander featuring symmetrical windows and carefully worked stone detailing across its facade. The structure displays classical proportions and was later adapted to serve as the seat of the regional parliament.

The building was constructed in the late 18th century under the direction of a bishop and initially served as a hospital for the city. Its purpose changed fundamentally in the 20th century when it was converted into the seat of a political institution.

The building carries the name of Saint Rafael and reflects its past role as a healing institution through the careful spatial organization of its interior. The rooms still convey a sense of care and service, having been designed to support those in need.

The building is located near the harbor and is easily accessible on foot from the old town. Access may vary depending on parliamentary sessions, so it is worth checking ahead about visiting arrangements.

The building played a key role in treating victims of a major maritime disaster in the 19th century. Medical staff mobilized their resources to care for hundreds of injured people in a short timeframe.
