Parc del Laberint d'Horta, Neoclassical garden in Horta-Guinardó, Spain
Parc del Laberint d'Horta is a large garden estate in the Horta-Guinardó district of Barcelona, combining classical and romantic landscape design. Across its extensive grounds, terraced levels, fountains, canals, and sculptures alternate, while the central maze sits enclosed by tall hedge walls.
Italian engineer Domenico Bagutti designed the estate from 1792 onward for Joan Desvalls, Marquis of Llupià, as the oldest garden in Barcelona. In the early 19th century, a Romantic garden was added to contrast with the original Neoclassical layout.
The name Laberint refers to the cypress hedge maze that forms the heart of the estate, drawing visitors for over two centuries. The strict symmetry of its paths and mythological sculptures reflect aristocratic garden design once used as a gathering place for high society.
The park opens daily from 10 AM to 8 PM between April and October, and from 10 AM to 6 PM from November through March. On weekends, expect longer waits at the entrance, while weekday visits tend to be calmer.
The Torre Soberana, a restored 14th-century country house, stands within the park grounds and displays 19th-century Arabesque decorative elements. The original defensive structure was later converted into a residential building that now serves as an architectural witness to several periods.
