Arbaiun canyon, Limestone canyon in Pre-Pyrenees, Spain

Arbaiun Canyon is a deep limestone gorge carved through Navarre's Pre-Pyrenean foothills by the Salazar River. The passage features sheer rock faces that rise dramatically on both sides of the water course.

The canyon was carved by the Salazar River over millions of years, gradually eroding through limestone bedrock. The geological formation reveals multiple layers from different periods stacked within the rock walls.

The canyon holds status as a Nature Reserve and Special Protection Area for Birds, supporting a substantial population of 200 griffon vulture pairs.

The Iso Viewpoint along the NA-178 road provides the main vantage point for observing the canyon. This elevated position allows visitors to take in the full scope of the gorge without needing to navigate difficult terrain.

The location hosts a significant population of griffon vultures that nest on the high rock walls. These large birds use the thermal currents rising from the canyon to soar and hunt across the landscape.

Between these, Pamplona keeps its walls and old town, with the cathedral and the...
