L'Estartit

L'Estartit is a coastal village at the mouth of the Ter River where it reaches the Mediterranean, with views toward the Medes Islands and the Montgrí mountain range. The settlement has an active harbor, sandy beaches, and trails that connect the shoreline to the surrounding hills.

The village formed as a new port after the original harbor at Torroella de Montgrí faced sand buildup problems in medieval times. It then grew as a fishing and trade center that shifted regional importance toward the sea.

The village is shaped by fishermen who work daily at the harbor and maintain maritime traditions through their craft. This connection to the sea appears naturally in local restaurants where fresh fish and seafood are central to the dining experience.

The village is easily walkable and offers simple access to beaches, the harbor, and trails in all directions. Visitors should take time to explore on foot, as most places are convenient to reach without a car.

A substantial portion of the protected area encompassing the Baix Ter plain, the Medes Islands, and Montgrí sits within the municipality's territory. This conservation area was set up to safeguard the uncommon mix of river wetlands, offshore islands, and mountain terrain.
