Castle of Alaejos

The Castle of Alaejos is a stone fortress with fortified structures rising above the Castilian landscape in Valladolid province, displaying medieval military architecture. The remaining walls and defensive elements show how the structure once protected the area with strong stonework and strategic design.

Bishop Alonso de Fonseca ordered construction of this defensive fortress in 1453, following the same architectural design as the Castle of Coca. The stronghold became significant in regional military and political conflicts during the medieval period.

The castle represents medieval military engineering from the region and stands as a protected Spanish heritage site today. Walking through the ruins, visitors can see how defensive fortifications were built during this era.

The archaeological site is managed by Alaejos Town Council and welcomes visitors year-round who can explore the remaining structures at their own pace. Wear sturdy footwear and allow time to walk through the defensive layout and observe the fortification elements carefully.

The fortress once held Queen Juana of Portugal, wife of King Henry IV of Castile, as a prisoner during medieval power struggles. This episode reveals how the stronghold became entangled in royal conflicts of the time.
