Nature Reserve Banks of Castronuño, Protected natural area in Valladolid province, Spain.
Nature Reserve Banks of Castronuño is a protected area covering wetlands, forests, and riverside landscapes along the Duero River in western Valladolid province. The terrain features diverse habitats that support a wide range of wildlife and vegetation across its expanse.
Construction of the San José dam in the 1940s transformed the river valley and created extensive wetlands. These new water landscapes formed the foundation for establishing the protected area as it exists today.
The reserve educates visitors about environmental conservation through its Park House, which offers guided tours and educational programs about local ecosystems.
The visitor center opens from Thursday to Sunday and provides information materials and audioguides. From there you can explore multiple walking and cycling paths that wind through the area.
The reserve maintains its water surfaces through dam water level management and supports large colonies of gray herons, egrets, and numerous water bird species. These human-created wetlands have become home to rare and protected species today.
