Church of Santa María del Castillo, Castronuño

The Church of Santa María del Castillo is located at the top of Castronuño and combines Romanesque and Gothic architectural styles in its design. The structure has a strong facade and sits in a position that overlooks the entire village from above.

The structure replaced an earlier building that completely collapsed in 1919, fundamentally changing the architectural landscape of the area. Following this collapse, the current church was built to restore a religious center for the community.

The church holds medieval religious artwork and sculptures that have shaped how the community expressed its faith through the centuries. These pieces reflect the spiritual life of people who gathered here to worship and mark important moments of their lives.

Access is restricted and visitors should call ahead to arrange a visit and check current conditions. The building is currently undergoing maintenance work, so it is wise to inquire beforehand about its availability.

The building features unusual architectural elements such as burial recesses built into its walls, which were not common in churches of that period. These spaces within the structure reveal how the community honored the deceased and kept them near this sacred place.
