Batería de Zuazo, Military fortification in San Fernando, Cádiz Province, Spain
The Batería de Zuazo is a coastal fortification in San Fernando consisting of stone walls and gun emplacements designed to monitor and protect the waters around Isla de León. The site has multiple bastions and was constructed to detect and repel ships.
King Felipe II ordered this site built in the 1500s to secure shipping routes around Isla de León and prevent invasions. The fortification was reinforced several times afterward and remained a key defensive point during French occupation.
The fortification shows how Spain protected its coastline and reveals the importance of this area in defending against attacks from the sea.
The fort sits near San Fernando's bridge and is easiest to reach on foot from the town center. Informational signs at the site explain the construction and how the guns were used.
The site was equipped with hundreds of tons of gun material and could spot nearly every ship trying to cross the bay because of its position. This made it one of the region's most critical defensive points.
