Bentomiz Castle

Bentomiz is a medieval fortress in Arenas, standing on a mountain peak at approximately 711 meters elevation. From this location, it commands extensive views across the Axarquia region and toward Velez-Malaga.

The fortress was built during the Moorish period and served as a key administrative center for the Kingdom of Granada in the 11th century. This era shaped its defensive structure and architectural design.

The structure displays Islamic military building techniques through its remaining walls and towers, reflecting regional construction practices. Visitors can observe these historical methods directly in the preserved sections.

Reaching the fortress requires following a dirt track that leads uphill, making it a somewhat strenuous walk. Proper footwear and adequate time are necessary to complete the climb.

Archaeological digs at the site uncovered Roman bath remains, revealing that this location was occupied by successive civilizations over centuries. The finds suggest a history extending far beyond the medieval period.
