Castillo de Vélez-Málaga

Castillo de Vélez-Málaga is a fortified complex from the Moorish period that sits on a hilltop in the town. The main tower and surrounding walls form the remains of this medieval fortress, which contained various areas for defense and administration.

The fortress was built during the Moorish rule on the Iberian Peninsula and served as an important defense point. Following various changes during the Reconquista, the main structure was largely rebuilt in 1970 after only the western wall remained standing.

The fortress displays typical Islamic architectural features with its reconstructed horseshoe arch windows and mud-brick walls visible throughout the fortification. These building elements reflect the craftsmanship used during the Moorish period.

The best approach is via Calle Fortaleza Alta, which passes by Santa Maria Church. Visitors can park on the grounds or explore on foot using the marked paths.

Ongoing archaeological digs at the site reveal original foundations and medieval construction methods layer by layer. These continuing excavations offer glimpses into how the fortress was built and used in its time.
