Polvorines de Fadricas, Military ammunition storage complex in San Fernando, Spain
Polvorines de Fadricas is a former ammunition storage complex on a triangular rocky promontory extending into the Bay of Cadiz. Twenty-six powder magazines are distributed across this coastal location between water and shoreline landscape.
Construction started in 1730 following a royal decree to establish gunpowder storage and guard posts at Punta Cantera. The site operated as ammunition and munitions workshop for the Spanish Navy until closing in 2001.
The defensive walls from the 18th century display baroque decorative details that reflect military building methods of that era. These elements remain visible as you walk through the abandoned structures.
The location sits on a rocky headland surrounded by water on three sides, making it easy to navigate the area. Visitors should be aware that the structures are in ruins and require caution when walking through them.
Beneath the military ruins lie archaeological remains of a Roman ceramics factory from the first century. This reveals that this coastal location served continuous craft and production purposes across more than 2000 years.
