Sant Esteve de Banyoles

Sant Esteve de Banyoles is a Benedictine monastery in the Catalan city featuring a three-apse church, Gothic entrance, and Neoclassical buildings. The different construction phases shape the overall appearance and showcase varied architectural styles across the complex.

The monastery was founded before 812 and underwent multiple reconstructions following Saracen raids and earthquakes in the early 15th century. The bell tower sustained severe damage in 1655 but was later repaired.

The name refers to Saint Stephen, whose veneration shaped the spiritual identity of this place. Visitors can see traces of this religious devotion in the architectural details and decorations throughout the cloisters and chapels.

The complex is easy to view from the outside and offers visitors an overview of the varied building styles. It is worth spending time exploring the cloisters and church to fully appreciate the architectural details.

During cloister restoration work in 2003, workers discovered original 11th-century Romanesque capitals decorated with late Gothic paintings. These rare findings reveal surprising artistic layers from different periods.
