Banyoles, municipality in Catalonia, Spain
Banyoles is a town in the comarca of Pla de l'Estany in Catalonia, built around a natural lake about 2 km long. The center holds medieval churches and narrow streets, while the surrounding area is shaped by low hills and open green land.
The town grew up in the 9th century around a monastery dedicated to Sant Esteve, which gave the settlement its first fixed point. Over the following centuries it expanded while keeping its medieval walls and religious buildings in place.
The town's name comes directly from the lake that defines its shape and daily life. Along the waterside paths, locals and visitors walk, cycle, and sit together, sharing the same easy rhythm around the water.
The path around the lake is flat and easy to cover on foot or by bicycle, with no steep sections along the way. The town center is compact enough to explore entirely on foot, so no transport is needed once you arrive.
The pesqueras, small fishing huts from the 19th and early 20th centuries, still line the shore and form one of the few surviving groups of this type in Spain. Some have been restored and can be seen up close from the lakeside path.
