Fountain of the Artichoke, Madrid, Baroque fountain in El Retiro Park, Madrid, Spain.
The Fountain of the Artichoke is made from limestone and granite, featuring mythological figures including a triton and nymph supporting Madrid's coat of arms beneath an artichoke finial. The structure combines classical water techniques with decorative elements typical of Baroque fountains.
King Carlos III commissioned architect Ventura Rodriguez to design this fountain in 1776 as part of Madrid's urban development program at Paseo del Prado. It was created during a period when the city aimed to reshape and modernize its public spaces.
The artichoke design reflects how important this winter vegetable was to Madrid's survival during cold seasons. This botanical choice shows how closely art connected to the city's daily needs and food sources.
The fountain stands on Plaza de la República de Honduras within El Retiro Park, accessible via Retiro and Ibiza metro stations. It's best to explore the park in good light, especially if visiting with children, as you'll walk through green spaces to reach it.
A bronze replica of this fountain exists at Plaza del Emperador Carlos V, making Madrid the only city with two identical artichoke monuments. This rare duplication shows how deeply the city connected with this unusual design.
