Ataria

Ataria is a nature center in Vitoria-Gasteiz spread across multiple levels with exhibits about local wetlands, wildlife, and environmental education. Large windows frame views of the Salburua lakes while indoor spaces present information about habitats and the animals living there.

The center opened in 2009 as part of efforts to protect and study the region's wetlands. Its designation as a Ramsar site reflects the growing importance of these lakes for nature conservation in Spain.

The center reflects how people in this region have always connected with wetland life and depended on these waters. Visitors can see displays showing traditional local approaches to caring for nature that continue to shape the landscape today.

The center is easy to reach and provides binoculars for watching birds as well as bicycle rentals to explore the surrounding area. Early morning or late afternoon visits work best for seeing animals moving through the wetlands.

On autumn evenings visitors can hear deer mating calls echoing across the Salburua lakes. This surprising sound reminds people that large mammals are still living and moving through this nature area.
