Corta Atalaya

Corta Atalaya is an open-pit copper mine in Minas de Riotinto with walls that descend deep underground, revealing layers of different mineral colors. The terraced sides of the excavation create a distinctive landscape shaped entirely by mining operations.

Mining operations began at this site in 1907 after underground workings experienced instability caused by spontaneous pyrite oxidation. This shift to open-pit extraction represented a major change in how the mine operated.

La Atalaya village was built in 1883 to house miners and their families, with schools and shops for daily life. The settlement reflects how workers and their communities lived during the mining era.

Wear sturdy shoes when visiting as the terrain is rocky and uneven with steep drops where the excavation extends downward. Plan to visit during cooler months since the open-pit location offers little shade and sun exposure can be significant.

The site has served as a filming location for movies and television productions due to its striking mineral-colored walls and deep terraced formation. This natural amphitheater-like landscape continues to attract filmmakers seeking dramatic backdrops.
