Embalse de Zumajo, Reservoir in the province of Huelva, Spain
Embalse de Zumajo is a small reservoir located in the southeastern area of El Campillo, covering about 11 hectares. The water body is surrounded by green areas and rocky landscapes, with calm surface water that reflects the surrounding environment.
The reservoir was built between 1907 and 1908 to supply water to nearby mining operations and communities in the region. Its construction followed a severe drought in 1904 that threatened water availability for industry and local residents.
The reservoir can be reached from El Campillo via two walking routes, each covering about 7 kilometers and easily accessible on foot or by car. The area is suitable for walking, fishing, and picnicking, with calm conditions that are especially refreshing during summer months.
A modest boathouse with origins in a sailing club founded by English mining workers stands by the reservoir's shore. This small building recalls the days when British engineers and workers shaped the area and shared their leisure traditions with the local community.
