Castell de Montornés

Castillo de Montornés is a medieval fortress ruin perched on a hilltop with remaining wall sections, water cisterns, and tower structures. The site shows different building phases and includes both squared and cylindrical defensive elements from various periods.

The fortress was built in the 10th century as a Moorish defensive structure and experienced multiple changes in control throughout the medieval period. It served as part of the region's broader coastal defense system against maritime threats.

The castle was part of a medieval defense network that protected coastal communities from raids. Visitors can understand how such fortifications were central to life in the region during that period.

The site sits within the Desierto de Las Palmas natural park and is reached via hiking trails starting from Benicàssim. Sturdy footwear and plenty of water are essential, as the paths climb uphill and can be strenuous in warm weather.
