Castle of Aguas Mansas, Medieval castle in Agoncillo, La Rioja, Spain.
The Castle of Aguas Mansas is a rectangular fortress in Agoncillo with four corner towers connected by defensive walls, built from cut stone blocks. The structure follows a classic medieval layout designed for defense and overlooking the surrounding land.
The fortress took shape between the 13th and 14th centuries and came under the ownership of Don Rodrigo Alfonso de Medrano in 1337, who directed major renovation work. The castle became the seat of this powerful family and shaped the region's politics for generations.
The eastern side displays the coat of arms of House Medrano and the Calatrava Cross, marking the importance of this noble family in the region. These symbols remind visitors of the power and influence that shaped the area for centuries.
The castle now functions as the town hall and library and can be visited by making prior arrangements with local administration. Contact the municipal office in advance to plan a visit and learn about current opening times.
A restoration completed in 1990 stripped away later additions to uncover the original medieval structure beneath. This careful work revealed that the authentic fortress had survived intact despite centuries of modifications.
